I want to do a first aid course?

I want to do a first aid course, I understand that there a few available ie:1 day course and a four day course. How do I know that the course I decide to go on will give me the correctly recognised certificate ?
What does the first aid at work certificate look like ?
Any examples ?

1. Two questions in one here.

You can contact your local St. John's Ambulance, number will be in telephone book. They do First Aid courses

If you NEED a First Aid certificate for work, your employer may / should provide the training. Or you could expect / should get, to be paid a supplement if you pay for the course yourself.

2. You should do your first aid with a recognised group. I'm not sure where you are in the world but often Lifesaving, Ambulance groups will do this.
To chose between the 1 day or 4 day, you should read or ask more about them. Often there are refresher courses, for people who have their cert but it's been a couple of years. I'm a student nurse and mine needs to be refreshed every 3 years.
Sometimes they have 1 and 4 day courses, to make it more time saving. So in the 1 day course you would spend all day studying, whilst the 4 day wouldn't be so intense.
Here is an example of a certificate:
