1. It sure is. I have been with them for the last year. They offer good classes and it is a good starting place.
2. I have been with American Red Cross for 15+ years in disaster service. I go to local fires to help families, give them some financial help, book motel rooms for 3 days, if they need medication, we provide funding if necessary. I also have chosen to go to large disasters and help those people in the affected area. I have been to Katrina, Rita, Wilma, the Hurricane Recovery programs and received a phone call to go out to Portland to help with the winter storm. There are many things you can choose to do, from feeding, sheltering, driving the emergency response vehicle, doing community shows. The training is free, some can be taken on line, many are in a classroom. The people everywhere are like family. I am sure you would love it.
3. i volunteered for them for 25 years- when i did just a little
and did not open up my mouth things were find -- when i started volunteering at the office things were find when i started to give my opinion and not just do things the way they told me thing s started to change - so in Florida that is the way it is do not know if it is all over that way just be careful you may be eaten alive they may take advantage and over use you when you agree to do one thing they will push something else on you and use you to death learn to say NO
classes were good as they say i taught a lot of them as a volunteer so they did not have to pay a emloyee to teach them
4. There may be a local web site that lists volunteer opportunities in your area. Try a United Way office if there is one there. You should volunteer for something you are passionate about and truly believe in. For example, if you are an environmentalist, start a campaign to clean up streets, vacant lots, or streams. I've seen resumes where it was obvious the person volunteered at a place just to have something to write down on the form. Is this also related to what you might want to do professionally? I volunteer for Hospice and our local Historical Museum as well as serving on the Board of Directors of a not-for-profit credit union. I find it most rewarding.
