self sufficiency, survivalist, emergency preparedness.?
My husband, dog and bird are worried about the future. We clip coupons, drive old cars, have no debt and have a yard large enough to grow food and keep animals, however, we have two mortgages. We owe 211K in California and 144K in North Carolina (we rent this house). I am afraid this will prevent us from being self sufficient. What can we do to be ok?
I do have debt, my mortgages but I owe nothing else. Sorry for the confusion.

1. Unless you're willing to live in a cave, you cannot be 100% self-sufficient.
Since it sounds like you want to live indoors, have cars to drive and pets to enjoy, I'm thinking one or both of you will need to do something in exchange for $$.
2. I hate to say it but I agree with him!
One question you say you have no debt but then you say you owe 211k and 144k so what do you mean??
I need to fully understand before I can truly give you MY opinion.
3. You say you have a yard big enough to grow food, but do you? If not then start, it can take a couple years to get the hang of gardening. I would also get in touch with your local resources, farming and ranching. Learn to preserve your excess harvest. As long as you have enough money to pay the mortgage of the house you are in then you should be fine.
