emergency financial aid places that help with rent?

i just lost my job due to an unforseen permanent layoff and was wondering if anyone knew of any emergency aid places that can help you with your rent.

1. Same happened to both me and my partner, we went to our local council for housing benefit, council tax benefit and job seekers allowance

Where are you though because we are in the UK, may be different if you are in the States

2. Churches
United Way -check the phone book they have a list of resources
Call your local jobs and family services they may help you too.
