Why are injured or sick people given glucose as emergency first-aid?

Public Comments

1. Because it can be readily absorbed by the body (no need to be digested) and used to quickly provide much needed energy.

2. Glucose undergoes a process called GLUCOLYSIS, in which ATP is produced ( the source of energy). Thus, an injured patient is given glucose to give him extra energy and also intra-venous electrolytes with salt and minerals.
So, the overall aim is to accelerate the metabolic processes, which need ATP to carry on chemical reactions, and a sick or injured person no doubt needs a lot of energy to start the normal body processes( metabolism) and recover.

3. Glucose is essential to provide energy to the cells and, to aid in the restoration during an acute illness as part of their recovery process. It restores hemostatsis by stimulating/activating the cells to help with the healing process.
