What do red cross babysitting classes teach you?
It gave a little description on the website, but it was vague. So, to people who have taken the course:
-Do they teach you how to bathe infants and toddlers?
-Do they teach you children's first aid or CPR (I'm also taking first aid and CPR courses, but I was just wondering)
And any detail about what the classes are like. I'm comparing it to Safe Sitter courses.
Also, what do their courses cost to take (babysitting, first aid, and CPR)? Are they worth it?
Public Comments
1. Babysitting classes as I am familiar with teach this:
The Heimlich Maneuver
What foods babies/toddlers can't eat
How to deal with phone calls to the parents when they're not home
Bathing a child
Changing a diaper
Basic preparation (asking for emergency numbers, setting a timeframe, setting a rate, etc.)
2. -leadership-finding work
-phone safety
-diapering
-rescue breathing
-bathing toddlers
-R.I.C.E.
-choking
-bleeding emergencies
-burn safety
-CPR (child and infant)
-allergic reaction
-bites and stings
-cardiac emergencies
-bandaging
etc...
you won't learn all of this in the course but it is in the babysitting hand book that you get from the course. The babysitting course is definitely worth the $85.00. I would highly recommend taking the class.
3. I teach this class for the Red Cross...
Bathing- no.
First Aid- yes
CPR- some localities do, some do not. Most offer it as a separate class since the two together are a very long day.
Cost- each chapter is a bit different. You can find yours at http://www.redcross.org
Other details- In general, depending on the chapter and instructor, the flow is: Leadership, business of babysitting, safety on the job, safe play, dealing with difficult children, holding/feeding/changing babies and toddlers, emergency first aid including choking and basic rescue breathing. In-depth first aid, rescue breathing and CPR may be offered, possibly on a different day,
