can you be forced to do a first aid course at work?

I work for a large hotel chain and have been told I have to do a first aid course, I do not want to, can they ake me?

Public Comments

1. Ake you? I doubt it

It's a free day out, with tea on tap.
You'd be mad not to

2. It can be a condition to continued employment. Besides that you are in an industry which deals with the public, and as such, there is an inherent factor of being prepared in emergency situations where it may be necessary. I'm a fitness trainer and part of my certification requires me to keep CPR/AED certification yearly.

3. if it's one of the conditions of your employment, yes. they may be within their rights to terminate you if you don't.

4. if it is their policy then yes check your contract see what it says about attending courses

5. No, you can't be forced. But then you might have to make a decision if you want to continue to work there, because they will most likely fire you.

6. If you want to continue working there, they can make you.

7. >>Can you be forced to do a first aid course at work?

Yes, the conditions under which you are employed, are down to your employer.

You agree to them, or you look else where for a job.

Your employer, or potential employer is free to require you to learn any skills which s/he feels will benefit the company, provided it is not discriminatory.

8. not sure what ake me is but....
can the AXE you -- yes depending on your position you could be fired
can the MAKE you -- yes it's a part of your position

most of the good hotels will ensure that ALL STAFF are able to be first responders to a degree. the higher the position the more elaborate the training. it's called being responsible for the safety of others and ensuring a safe secure environment for the guests as well as the staff. generally front of the house staff as well as housekeeping supervisors (at least often floor housekeepers and housemen as well) are also required to be CPR certified.

9. Why would you not want to take a first aid course? It's a most useful thing to know - not only for the workplace but also for the home and outside. You don't mess about with blood & guts if thet's what you're afraid of , it's textbook, CPR practise, theory and some bandaging practice. Some employers even pay a small annual extra amount to employees with a first aid qualification.
Go for it, have fun. Chances are you'll never have to use the skills you learn, I used mine more when volunteering at rugby matches than I ever did at work.

10. God Forbid...One day some thing might happen at your home, or whilst out and about and you will not know what to do. Then what?
This is a basic course and a skill you learn, HOW TO SAVE SOMEONES LIFE -you MIGHT NEED TO DO CPR ON THAT PERSON..
Just think about it, it could benefit you in the long run. AND SAVE SOME ONES LIFE.
Enjoy the course and a chance to learn something new.
Good Luck :)
