What would YOU do in this emergency?

For example, you are walking to work/your job, and you find a man severely beaten up. Clean-shaven, and smartly dressed, he is obviously a reasonably "wealthy" man. He is complaining of injury and pain, and he is bleeding heavily on the other side of the path. He is out of way of the road, so there is no danger of being at risk of another incident. No one is helping out, and you wonder why.

Do you reach him, leave him for someone else, apply first aid, or just simply call an ambulance?

I want to hear what you would do in an emergency like this.
Okay. So far (3 answers), it's looking good.
@tinow

I included the facts about his appearance to judge whether you may have thought the man may have been wounded for his wealth or goods or not. It had nothing to do with your opinion on how help should be given.

Public Comments

1. 1st call 911 (emergency number) & help this person - apply first aid

2. call 911 and stay with the man until help arrives.

3. apply pressure to the wound and call an ambulance

4. I would ascertain if he was fully conscious, then take off my coat or shirt or anything that could staunch the outflow of blood.i would ring for an ambulance and police.Try to make sure he was on his side in case of vomiting.see if his airways were clear.Try and make sure he was comfortable and warm.can't think if ive missed anything.

5. Call an ambulance, get to the guy and stay with him.. if i can do any first aid for him i would, like try to stop his bleeding for one.

6. irrelevant of how hes dressed or how 'wealthy' he appears to be I'd call for a ambulance, check around for myself to see if theres any further danger, then offer any assistance I could.

are you trying to ascertain if looks are important in helping people or if we are all just a bunch of inconsiderate tw@ts?

first aid is about offering help as you well know, but the primary rule is to keep yourself out of danger - so if hes severely beaten theres a chance the asailants were close by (primary safety) being a female, and somewhat novice at first aid, its pointless trying to save a man if Ive no idea what im doing - calling an ambulance gives my location (personal safety) and ensures that help comes as quick as possible.

am i missing anything?

7. Most people freeze when they happen upon an accident scene. They don't know what to do and so do nothing .Even a simple phone call to 9-1-1 is better than nothing.

Personally I have had some training and this is how I would have reacted (I have actually handled a similer situation but my vicitm was in the middle of the road. I had bystanders on traffice duty directing cars around us) Bystanders are awesome allies if you can give them a job they know they can handle.

Identify a bystander to Call 9-1-1 (You can't if your hands are full)

Introduce yourself to the person and explain that you are there to help. This covers you as a good samaritin.

Assess his injuries- Does he have an Airway, is he Breathing and Circulation (do they have a pulse)
You said that he was bleeding- Try to find some clean cloth (a jacket, or sweater) Apply pressure to the wound to help staunch the bleeding. (Yes, I actually keep rubber gloves in my truck emergency kit just in case of something like this) Try to keep him still. If you suspect he could have fallen and hit his head Instruct another bystander to hold his head gently, yet firmly still. Keep talking to the patient- try to find out as much of what happened as you can. When the paramedica arrive allow them to take over and fill them in on everything you have learned about the situation.

8. In this situation there are 2 clear objectives.

1/ Stop or control the bleeding. This is first priority because you don't know how long he has ben bleeding and prolonged bleeding can result in shock which is life threatening.

2/ Arrange for transportation to hospital because other than the fact that he is bleeding you do not know the full extent of his injuries. Ambulance is the preferred method because you could be unlucky and take him to a hospital where the ER / Casualty department is either closed or has been inundated due to a major accident.

If he is fairly lucid, any details of pain that he is suffering could be useful to the ambulance crew and help to ensure that they arrive at the scene with an action plan.

If possible ask a helper to call for the ambulance because that will reduce any delay while you control the bleeding

9. Regardless of the way a person is dressed I would try to help in some way even if its only to call police and an ambulance. I would check the area around this person first before I would offer my help since I don't want to become a victim as well. I would make sure I have a person that is breathing, and has a pulse. If not I would do what I am trained to do. If alert I would ask if this person wants my help. I will not force myself and my training on a person that doesn't want my help but I would stay close until help arrives. If they say that they want help I would do what I can within my scope of training.
