I just had to share this...what do you think?

I don't have a stomach muscle anymore from cancer and so when I fell a few weeks ago and was unable to get up I realized I needed an emergency plan in case I was seriously injured so I trained my 5 month old Aussie to go get me the phone. This video was her first try from the phone base after about 10 minutes of training her with the fetch off the ground. She now gets it from any room of the house. I had never trained a dog for this so I was really impressed with her ability. Anyone got their dogs trained to do things for them to aid them physically? How did you train yours? Got a video to share?

We have BC's that are strictly working dogs and smart as a whip but I never had an Aussie that I had from the beginning. She is strictly an inside dog and although she loves herding with the others she is going to show conformation and agility. This was my first attempt at training for a service to me and I gotta admit it was cool as heck. She is very demanding and high energy but loves to try and outhink me (which sometimes is pretty easy...lol) I'd love to find someone around here that trains service animals and teach me how to do more :)
Sorry it's on my FB account, I'll try and upload it somewhere else. And Bobbi L- yeah thousands of service dogs do this daily I still think it's pretty cool that "I" was able to get her to do it for me without the "service" training. I bet people just love to being around you with that sweet attitude ;)
I uploaded it to a flicker site...

1. Wow! Very cool! I love the little bit of attention deficit puppy in the beginning, but once she figured out exactly what you wanted she was on it!

I don't have any disabilities, but I do have a dog that I hike with frequently. When we hike we often encounter very steep inclines (going up or down). Somewhere along the way in this dog's life he was clearly taught (or maybe he just knows?) to stand very still and let the person he is walking with lean on him if they need to. It is fantastic! He has helped me up and down so many mountains.

It is great to see people like yourself giving their dogs such an important job to do!

2. I can't watch the video but I'll make sure I do. Aussie's are VERY smart dogs as I'm sure you've already realized... good job! It's so rewarding, isn't it?!

3. That's amazing that you trained her to do that, she must be a brilliant dog. No, I haven't, as I haven't found a reason to (if I did, it would be something stupid/lazy like getting my 10 pounder to open the fridge and get me a beer).

4. Wow! It's amazing how dogs can learn things like this. They're a lot smarter than people think. Good job at training her to do something like that though!

My dog only knows basic commands. I don't have much time to teach her extra things. I need to study study study so I can do good in school. And when I have time with her it's usually for playing or hiking and walking. lol =\..

5. Thousands of service dogs do things like this daily, so it's really not anything unusual.

I'm not going to log into Facebook to see your video.

6. My dog Dakota will get my mother if I need her too I have never trained her to do it but she does it.
My lab mix Duke can pull open my bedroom door with his nose. I am tryin to get him to pull on a door pull I made but he hasn't caught on yet.

You have a smart dog! Very nice! My Dakota is a very smart dog too she is a Rottie/GSD/Husky mix.

7. Whoa, Bobbie L has out-gooned herself. Don't you just love the dog section's resident long-term troll? Bet her mother is proud.

That is a brilliant video and you completely made my day!

8. ... Oh jeeez... brilliant video! haha my dog won't even fetch a ball.

That **** bobbie l needs to get off her high horse... what a horrible thing to say...

9. What a smart girl! Thanks for posting the video, made my day!

10. Aww that's so cute!! So smart too! I have to try to train my dog to do that.
Don't mind the rudeness of some people on here like Bobbie L.. they have no life. I have never seen thousands of dogs do this, and I am not sure how she could have either. Hmm.. she sat and watcheds THOUSANDS of dogs before eh? Wow. Thousands? LOL

11. I think it's great not only that she is able to help you but that you are giving her a purpose and she obviously looks very happy about it. I'm a dog trainer and people always think that training your dog requires expensive equipment and endless amounts of time but in reality it just takes someone who can think outside the box and who can invest some time and effort into doing some consisient training which is exactly what you did and you should be proud of yourself and your dog.

12. Well done! it must be a great weight off your mind to know that she can do this for you.
