2. The Red Cross is made up of volunteers who are dedicated to helping people in trouble. Most communities in the United States have a local "chapter." In fact, there are Red Cross organizations all over the world (for example, in Muslim countries, they're called Red Crescent).

The American Red Cross is the national coordinating organization for all the US Red Cross chapters. The American Red Cross is a partner with other Red Cross organizations around the world, but it doesn't run them. The American Red Cross is doing two major things for the Haiti crisis--sending some their American volunteers who are highly trained to assist there, and forwarding financial donations coming in from Americans to the Haitian Red Cross.

They have a very good website with lots of information about the organization and the good work they do. Go straight there for more details :-)
