Does the USA ever provide emergency aid without any strings attached?

Public Comments

1. Yes. I hope we stop providing aid, period.

2. I think the relief to Burma was without strings or perhaps it was the private organizations.

3. Sometimes the aid comes with bungy cords attached.

4. Emergency aid yes. It's good PR . Structural aid never. It's always about their own economic interest.

5. America gives more money and food to poor countries then most other countries combined. That's something people on the Left will never tell you about.

6. most of the time the dictators take control of the aid we send and it dont reach the starving people.

7. Not during the Bush and Reagan administrations

8. Yes, they do very often. As someone said, it's good international PR.

9. I believe the aid for the 2004 Tsunmi was without strings, but I could be mistaken.

I am also not sure that delivering aid with strings attached is such a bad thing. Guarantees that aid be used a certain way can be a necessary step in preventing it from aiding corrupt governments or from being wasted. I think you are probably understandably pessimistic about the US's foreign aid motives, and NGO's are often more effective and less likely to be self-serving.

10. Everything has some kind of strings attached! Simple fact, it's the way of the world!
As to what those strings are, now that's another question?

Just to add to 'Celticbloodwarrior's comment the USA may well give a lot of aid but the political system has been and is used it exploit many poor country, in a way as to keep them poor! And that is a fact that many fools don't even think about!!!!

11. Rarely.
Celticblood:that's a myth perpetuated by Bush and his cronies.America falls woefully short when it comes to generosity.Recently a Oxfam spokesperson said it was high time America pulled its finger out. So,stop making things up at least match per capita what far smaller nations provide.

12. What typically happens is that the USA provides aid and then the host country will lie to their own people about the conditions of the aid to hide that government's crimes to their own people.

13. I'm unsure about immediate emergency aid but, otherwise there are strings attached. Most countries don't coerce others with aid.
