1. Teach how to approach the scene of an accident with caution!
Danger - danger to themselves, bystanders and lastly the casualty.
Then how to check the casualty response
Response - Shake & shout (talk & touch) depending on what country your in. I use COWS - Can you hear me, Open your eyes, Whats your name, Squeeze my hands and a gentle shake of shoulder.
Then how to check the Airways, for obstructions, how to clear if needed.
Airways - Head tilt and Chin lift, look and scoop if necessary.
Then how to check for signs of breathing, by Looking, Listening and Feeling of the rise and fall of upper abdomen, and lower chest, and the feel of air escaping the casualty mouth and nose.
Breathing - place hand on upper abdomen and lower chest, looking for rise and feel of chest (look at the feet of casualty), at the same time feeling for escape of air coming from casualties mouth & nose.
This should not take longer than 10 seconds.
If no signs of breathing, then do 2 rescue breaths, then onto straight into, Compression/circulation - 30 compressions, followed by another 2 rescue breaths, continue 30:2 until Emergency personal arrive.
Defibrillator - I would not teach them how to use an AED, as they are highly unlikely to have access to one. But certainly talk to them about it, and the benefits of the AED.
Teach them how to manage, the unconscious person and the importance of placing a person into lateral position.
Lateral/recovery position - if left on their back they tongue and soft palate will obstruct their airways.
Also teach them how to manage
Major bleeding - external & internal
Minor bleeding
Burns
Asthma
Heart Attack
Stroke
Allergies/anaphylactic
Chocking
Diabetes
Communicable diseases and anything else that you think is important, remember what ever you teach it needs to be age appropriate.
If they are young I would emphasis the importance of dangers, getting help and how to get help, both land-line and mobile, how to manage someone who is unconscious, and how to place someone in lateral/recovery position, and how to manage bleeding etc.You can teach them how to apply a bandage or sling, which is a fun activity.
