Are you prepared for a real emergency?
When I got home from work to day I was reading my e-mails, I had received one from the AKC. It is kind of like the magazine offering different stories and articles for you to read. One of the articles jumped out at me It was ARE YOU PREPARED, its about what to do if you need to evacuate and what you should have in your pets first aid kit. Well it has been awhile since I needed to use mine so I dug it out. I definitely need to stock up on a few things and replace some stuff. Now the article also provided a list here is the site:
http://www.akc.org/pdfs/news/are_you_prepared.pdf
My first aid kit is very basic I would like those of you who have first aid kits to please review this list and let me know if you would add anything to it especial if you have a substitute that might cost a little less but work just as good or if you have something in yours that you think is better. Also If you have any other sites like this one could you please share thanks in advance.
I am putting this in other pets because I have several kinds(cats, birds, dogs, and horses) and I use the kit for all my animals.

1. cool and now i will get prepared b/c I wasnt before
2. I wasnt, but I will read the story
3. I am prepared =] My family has a "game plan" for evacuating all the animals in case of fire or other emergency (considering we raise both dogs and rabbits this could be a challenge) As well as first aide kits for each of the different kinds of animals we have and then a large general kit which includes the basics for everyone.
4. I have 8 animals and think about this often.
My birds are in large cages, so I have a spare small cage for them in the garage that I can put them in the car when a disaster might strike.
My desert tortoise fits in a dog kennel that I keep in the garage for him
My dogs, I have three of them, can ride in the car on our laps. I have their meds bagged up just in case. I keep extra food and lots of bottle water in the house. For the turlte, I can find him grass and flowers anywhere, that's what he eats.
So i try to be as prepared as possible because I would never let myself be put in a position where I would have to leave my animals
5. Oh dearest me, Lisa. I live in hurricane alley: Florida. We are so prepared at our house it is overkill. Not only do I have corrugated steel shutters for every window and door, I have a reinforced garage door, a huge generator along with a way to have enough clean water for all of my animals and humans for 2 months.
I have a nifty first aid kit made up for me by my glorious vet that has all kinds of stuff with instructions!!
I also have enough kennels for my 9 dogs and 4 cats to keep them in one area.
And my home is open for anyone who wants to come ride it out because WE do not leave our pets. No way.
6. Interesting, but Im not sure most of that is necessary. If we had to evacuate,, I would probably just grab my dogs with their leashes, a bag of food, and their bowls. We dont need no stinking dog beds - they can sleep on me :o)
We nearly had to evacuate a few years ago - a wildfire came within 1500 feet of my property. I had it all planned out - two vehicles full of dogs, and I would lead the horse out, since I did not have a trailer.
Fortunately, we did not have to leave.
Earthquakes, now - I have my generator, a tent, food, propane appliances, water......we are not going anywhere. :o)
7. Thank you so much for getting everyone aware. I'm going to check to see if my first aid kit is good. =) Sometimes people believe that nothing bad could happen to them so they don't do anything about it.
