Do you have a first aid kit for your dog??
Even if you have an emergency vet, do you know what to do immediately if you're somewhere with your dog and he/she gets injured or sick? I am out lots of times camping or hiking where it would take me over an hour to get back to any kind of civilization and have to be prepared even then. Do you have any kind of system to help your pet immediately if they do get hurt?
Oh no.... I have one for myself.. This is what first helped me

1. I actually just ordered one online, because we're going camping in a few weeks. I can't wait until it comes in so I can check it out! I'll see if I can find the link for it....

There it is... has pretty much everything, lots of stuff can be used on humans, too :D
I also printed off the nearest (to the campsite) emergency vet's contact info and put it in my glovebox already. I'm actually pretty much all packed up and ready to go for camping LOL I can't wait!!
2. we have a dog first aid kit in our car and when we go hiking or camping we put it in a little backpack. \
sometimes we put it on a dog jacket and she wears it when we go hiking.
you can get it at petco/petsmart
3. If you go camping and hiking, yes, definately get a first aid kit for your pooch. It could mean life or death for him. They sell them at local pet stores but are pretty expensive. You could go and look on the box at the pet store to see what supplies are in that one, and then go to the drug store and duplicate them. You really need one for your baby though.
4. I have a phone, a parent/friend, something to put pressure on bleeding wound to stop the bleeding and/or tie up a wound, some water to wash out the wound, hopefully something to disinfect it (the water might do that until we get to the vet), and hopefully something to help carry the dog (if it is Nelson or Lillia, the heavier ones).
Well that plus the Dog first aid kid i ordered online, i will post the link in a minute.
ADD:
These are the things i have in it, not the particular kit.

5. pet stores (like Pet Smart) sell first aid kits for pets. I keep mine handy with my pet's harness. When I take my pet with me for a ride it is right there. Try to get in the habit of having it with you. Do you take a first aid kit for yourself when you go hiking? Maybe you should make one to take with you that combines what you would need for both of you; so you would both be safe.
Make sure that your cell phone is charged all the way before you go hiking; also.
If your local pet shop does not have a first aid kit; just use your common sense and put one together.
I have one in my bird aviary room for my exotics as well ; that way you don't have to go rushing around looking for what you need; it is right there.
6. That is a good question.
I actually only keep a box of benedryl (emergency allergic reactions till we get to the ER vet,) and a jar of metamucil (as recommended by my vet for my lab that eats everything...has come in handy a few times when he ate glass and a razor blade.) I had a container of that quick stop stuff, but have no idea where that went in the move.
This is just in my house. I would definitely need to expand my first aid kit if I took my dogs somewhere where an ER vet couldn't be reached immediately.
7. we have a first aid kit in the car and we bring it with us when we go camping, hiking, etc. In addition we have a big rubbermaid in the garage that is ready to be grabbed in case of an emergency evacuation. Extra leash and collar, water bottles, pictures of the dog and cats, vet numbers, food/water dishes and towels. I think there might be some more things in there too, but i can't remember off hand what else. =]
Heres a good link:

8. I have a vehicle pet first aid kit as well as one for the home. Many owners with kits forget to include benedryl for allergic reactions though.
9. We have three dogs, had them over 8 years and never had an emergency nor a kit. I figure should the need arise I could call the vet that gives them their shots and he'd advise me what to do and when to come in to his office.
10. Okay...we are total crap dog parents :D We have a human first aid kit, but we never thought to get a doggy one. I just showed this question to my husband and he agreed that we suck! I'm ordering one today!!! Thanks for the great idea! Which should have been an obvious necessity to me, but hey...I never claimed to be a perfect dog owner :D
The one thing I have done in the past when we go camping with dogs...is go to petsmart or somewhere with the cheap pet tags and make up one with: Dog's name, Campsite location and # if there is one, phone numbers...whatever I can squeeze on!
11. Great question. I do not have a first aid kit specifically for my dogs, but I do have a first aid kit. I have also bought some self stick elastic bandages and styptic powder to go along with it.
I was going through my books (I have several on holistic dog health and training) and realized that I didn't have anything on first aid. I bought a copy of the book "The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats" by Prevention (I got a used copy from the Amazon.com Marketplace). I am very happy with this book. It gives you a complete list of what to have in a pet first aid kit and also a list of medicines (many are the same as for people) with the correct dosages for dogs and cats. It is very easy to find what you are looking for in the book. For each accident/problem it tells when and if a vet is needed, and it gives a list of things required from the medicine chest (term used in the book). It also tells you what needs to be done immediately and gives follow up care. Everything is illustrated included CPR and the Heimlich manuever.
I would definately take this book and my first aid kit whenever I travel with my dogs.
12. I usually go overboard with my dog/human first aid kit. I carry assorted bandages, ace bandages, benadril, and other meds, That stuff like super glue for people to close wounds(forgot the name) snake bit kit, splints, assorted other necessities, and a poncho thing my friend made in case we have to carry them out. Lucily my Rotties have their own backpacks with water, treats, toys the first aid kit etc. You all have given my great ideas on how to improve my kit. thanks
