Future Medical Student ?

Ok, so in 2 years time after my A levels i would like to apply for Medical School (Thinking of Manchester). I understand that you need really good grades but was just wondering about the extra stuff id need to do to stand out from other applicants.
I was thinking to do a first aid course with the Red Cross, but which one do I do? Theres so many!
And then i was thinking about the volunteer work, this can be in hospitals or old peoples homes right?
Thanks!
p.s any other things ive missed out that id need to do ?

1. When the time comes apply to multiple medical schools because its very competitive and the more places you apply to the better chances are you will get in. You haven't mentioned anything about the MCAT's so make sure you take them on time so you don't have to wait to take them and have a gap of time where your not in school or doing anything.
