What is the best way to become a WEMT (Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician)? I live in Pennsylvania, and it seems there are no WFR (Wilderness First Responder) courses or WEMT schools on the East coast. Is it best to first become registered as an EMT-Basic then take Wilderness training courses later, or should I first become an expert trekker, and later learn the EMT field. ---I want to work as a medic in remote locations (wilderness, ocean, etc.), I do not want to spend most of my time in an ambulance... Can anyone help me achieve this goal? Thanks!
Has anyone ever attended National Outdoor Leadership School or know of anyone who has?.........? I am Applying to NOLS National Out Door Leadership School for the fall semester for the Outdoor educator/ Wilderness First Responder. With the intent of working for the national parks as a WFR. I would like to know if any one has attended this School or this course and how they liked it also a little about our experience while there and if you have any advice. Thank-you everyone for all your help.
How do I become part of Search and Rescue, especially for rock climbing rescues? I have heard some things about a rock climbing instructor certificate, EMT cert., Wilderness First Responder cert., NASAR cert... is there anything else? Also if I have all my certifications, could I get hired to do it in one place for 6 months or less? I am in college right now and have most of the certifications and was wondering if I could take a year or so off and do that and ski patrol for a year before med/grad school. Or if Search and Rescue is a job reserved for career professionals.
Getting prescription medications without a prescription? I will be going on a backpacking trip to a extremely remote area for a 60 day trip with a group. There is no cell phone signal, no way to reach anyone, you are on your own. Any medical needs will have to be met by what we have, there is no access to doctors, pharmacies, hospitals, police. Rescue is up to us if something happens. How can I get prescription drugs to take with me. I am not looking for anything that is too crazy, but they are still required to have prescriptions. I don't know any doctors well enough to ask a favor and we will not have a doctor with us, just highly trained in first aid, trauma, wilderness emergency responders. How does one do this, there must be a way?
Dropping out of high school.? I am a freshman in high school. I am 16 the year is almost over. I have been working since i was 14. I worked at an independent/assisted senior living community, was a waiter, I was also a preschool counselor at a day camp. I am now a lifeguard and swim instructor. I am thinking about dropping out of school because of all the stuff they put you through. Also I have family problems, and some problems with friends. I want to work full time and live on my own. What do you think about that. I have many certifications. I am a wilderness first responder, lifeguard for pools water parks and waterfronts, i am a certified swim instructor, i have great work references. I also have many other certifications. all help would be greatly appreciated.
Can someone read this and tell me if it makes sense. If not can you help me improve it? The article “The Wild Places” is about an author, Rodger Deakin and his compelling journey throughout the cities, villages and roads of Britain, to discover the vestiges of wilderness. As the article explores the author’s scenic adventures throughout the ‘wilderness’ of Britain, the responder is instinctively taken on an imaginative journey, were the mesmerising experiences of the traveller is recreated in the realms of inspiration.
What kind of First Aid Kit would NOT be eligible for a Flexible Spending Account? I would like to purchase a nice Emergency First Aid Kit with My Flexible Spending Account (FSA). What wouldn't qualify? Would this one that I would like to get be eligible? http://www.abfirstaidstore.com/product/fogg/first-aid-kitslarge-kits/1500-first-aid-kit I am frequently outdoors pursuing adventure sports like Rock Climbing, Kayaking & Backpacking and am an active Triathlete as well. This kit would be for the house and back of my SUV and would be a comfort to know it's there. I've also taken Wilderness First Responder Courses and was a Combat Lifesaver in the military so I know a few medical tricks. Would this kind of kit be eligible? Thanks in advance.
Guarenteed Acceptance Rate E-4 Navy Corpsman? Ahoy, first time user here. I am currently thinking about joining the Navy and signing on as a Corpsman, particularly field based to work with the Marines/Spec Ops and I am curious to know if the Navy allows people to enlist with guarenteed acceptance to "A" school like the Coast Guard and if I qualify. Basically I am looking for the best deal possible to where I can do the greatest amount of good and want to know as much as I can to understand exactly what it is that I want before I speak with a recruiter. Pay is nice but not my ultimate motivator which is why I am not applying to OCS. Here is a list of some of my qualifications/experience, The reason I am listing them is because I am open to suggestions, so If anyone knows of any military positions that might be a good match for my skills feel free to suggest them, just keep in mind that I am a healer at heart and have no desire to take life, I would only kill if it was kill/be killed situation. >4 year Bachelors Degree in Outdoor Education >Medically certified as both: NREMT and WFR(Wilderness First Responder) >FF Certified as Wildland Firefighter >LE Certified as Forest Protection Officer USFS. >Extensive Experience as a back country trip guide and bush monger. Infact this past summer I canoed the entire Mississippi River >Eagle Scout. I consider myself to be a 'jack of all trades' when it comes to the outdoors and recieve very high reviews from my trip participants and teachers and have been told I thrive when faced with adversity. I have a strong desire to put my skills to use and serve the country I love while also continueing to live life to the fullest. Thanks -Chiajidamoo 'Big Squirrel' Thanks for the replies thus far. Both of you answered my primary question. My follow up question is in regards to joining the FMF. can I go directly into training from 'A' school? or do I need to be assigned to work a hospital first? As to the remark about no place for pacifists. I never made a claim to be one, just merely stated that I have no desire to kill. If need be, I would do it, just not terribly excited to do so. I also do not seek the MOH. I have the Confederate army mindset that "all military men are equally hero's and don't need medals to prove it" Actually. I did not know my degree did not qualify me for OCS. That is good to know just saved me some possible embarrassment, thanks for that.
Suggestions On How To View An Autopsy? I'm a 19 year old college student in Kansas who is thinking of becoming a nurse, or a pathologist. I'm interested in watching an autopsy. I would prefer to be able to watch it live, or through a glass partition instead of through a video, but I am not enrolled in any college level anatomy classes. I've taken anatomy in high school and was able to touch previously autopsied bodies, and I currently have my Wilderness First Responder license, but I'm worried I will not be allowed to view an autopsy. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about this? My best case scenario would be to start to volunteer at the County Coroners Office to see if I would like to enter that career field. If it helps, I live in Kansas.
wilderness first responder...? Im trying to figure out how to get certified as a wilderness first responder, Im 16. Can a NOLS course certify you? Can you upgrade to a wilderness EMT after? how many times do you have to be certified to make your FR permanent? Do you have to be a WEMT to make it Permanent???
How to Get into National Park Service? I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology/Environmental Education and my resume looks a bit like this - summer job working with birds of prey, teaching public about avian biology/conservation - 1 SCA summer naturalist internship on Blue Ridge Parkway - 1 summer naturalist internship at state park - 6 month naturalist internship for Audubon Society - 2 months as field technician for Yale School of Public Health and MAPS project (lyme's disease study, bird banding) I have some experience (though not as much as I'd like) relevant to environmental education/working as a Park Ranger, but I've hit such a pleateau. I've applied for hundreds of jobs on usajobs.com, but am just starting to think that the field is oversaturated...on top of all the jobs that have been cut. So, I've been wondering: "How do I get into the Natnl. Park Service?". I've been referred for many NPS jobs, but hired for none. Do I need to move to a less impoverished area? Get my Masters? Get Wilderness First Responder Training (which I'll do if I can, anyway?) Gah! It seems like the saying, "If you find something you really like, care about, and are good at, you'll never work a day in your life" really is true, except not the way they meant it!
Should I quit grad school and do something totally different? Rather than bitch and moan to my friends and siblings about how much I despise school, I want to bitch and moan to an impartial audience. I'm in the fourth quarter of a two-year History MA program, which I desperately want to quit, but I'm not sure what I would do instead, especially with the economy and my resume being what they are. I got my BA in 2007. My undergraduate studies were fun and not too difficult. I never found myself being squeezed for time or disillusioned with the course material, and when I got my diploma, it didn't feel like a major accomplishment. Getting the BA was something I never questioned. Now, three years later, I'm studying history again, and it seems utterly pointless. I have a field exam tomorrow afternoon that I've studied for for weeks, but I feel almost indifferent as to whether I nail it or not. I've made plans to get my teaching credential after the master's so I can teach high school social studies, but that's more so I have a way of feeding myself than because it's what I want to do. My family and some of my more distant friends have advised me to follow this path. My close friends think I should quit if academia/education doesn't fulfill me. They, of course, won't be feeding me if I do that and can't find work. What I'd really like to do is to work in a field that directly serves the community I live in in a real, tangible way. Firefighting and nursing are two fields that come to mind. Fairly soon, I may have the opportunity to drop out of grad school (or take an indefinite leave of absence), to volunteer for a year or more at a remote location in the North Cascades. If I do that, I will have the opportunity to acquire some practical skills, including wilderness first responder training, CDL certification, and basic firefighting education. Should I be slightly daring and just screw everything I've accomplished in grad school, or should I stick it out for two and a half more quarters and get the teaching credential as well?
Military Jobs, what to pick? These are what I figure to be my strongest credentials: Nationally Registered EMT-B Wilderness First Responder Certified Trained at NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) Current Student at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Paramedic program and set to graduate 4/11 I have excellent navigation/map reading skills, strong leadership qualities, and a desire to help my country. I know obviously I need to go a Medical route, but I want a combat job as well, and I don't want to be a grunt. Please help point me in the right direction. Army, Navy, AF, Coast Guard....
Shin hasnt healed and its been 5 months.? One day while running across some boulders I misjudged a jump and my shin met the edge of a boulder. I cut it to the bone. I could walk fine and it felt like someone had just punched me in the shin-(usual thing for the youngest of three brothers). I am a Wilderness First Responder and I cleaned and wrapped it myself-I was in a remote part of AK when I did it. So I went on with life and it didn't really bug me. The skin healed and left a beautiful scar and it did not get infected. The problem comes when I run. It hurts where I hit it when and after I run and few other times. I was told it was a sub dermal hematoma by a physical therapist, but I have never had any injury last this long. I am 25 and very athletic-runner, climber, mtn. biker etc. I still have a raised section on my shin from where I hit it and the size really hasn't gone down. It actually swells after a run. I haven't been running on it constantly, I didn't run for about 3.5 months after I did it. I have not been to the doctor because I dont have insurance. Thats all the details I can think about. Thank you.
Can you take an IV certification course? I was in the military and now I am a wilderness first responder. I know how to give IVs already but I would like to get certified to give them. Is that possible as a civilian not in the medical field?
How to sign up to be CPR certified? Many summer camps I want to work at require that all their staff know CPR and have the certificate or something. For a certain camp I also need to be a Wilderness First Responder. Where can I sign up for these things?

How to become a firefighter/paramedic/cop? Right now i really want to be a paramedic, but with that alone i cannot make it in the U.S. So heres what i plan to do... Go to a local college, major in outdoor education with a few of the pre-med classes thrown in. While going to college join the local Volunteer fire department, and get registered as a medical and wilderness first responder, and get my EMT certification. Then after graduation, go to a police or fire academy, and try to pick up the full paramedic certification? Does that sound like a good plan? Or can i just go straight to an academy and get all of those things? Thanks.

Converting WFR Certification in NYS? When I'm 16, I'll be taking a program in which I will be certified as a Wilderness First Responder. Is there anyway to convert that to a New York State certification like a Certified First Responder?

Wilderness First Aid vs Wilderness First Responder? A job that has some work in remote areas requires Wilderness First Aid training (WFA). I do not have either WFA or WFR (Wilderness First Responder). If I take a WFR course, could it count (supersede) the WFA certification for this job? Wilderness First Responder: 9 day class Wilderness First Aid: 2 day class Obviously, if I have the time, WFR will give me more training that could save a life sometime. So I'm leaning toward taking that class, as opposed to WFA. I hope it counts for WFA though?
