Myanmar junta hands out aid boxes with generals' names. Your thoughts? 42 minutes ago YANGON, Myanmar - Myanmar's military regime distributed international aid Saturday but plastered the boxes with the names of top generals in an apparent effort to turn the relief effort for last week's devastating cyclone into a propaganda exercise. The United Nations sent in three more planes and several trucks loaded with aid, though the junta took over its first two shipments. The government agreed to let a U.S. cargo plane bring in supplies Monday, but foreign disaster experts still were being barred entry. Despite international appeals to postpone a referendum on a controversial proposed constitution, voting began Saturday in all but the hardest hit parts of the country. With voters going to the polls, state-run television continuously ran images of top generals including junta leader, Senior Gen. Than Shwe, handing out boxes of aid at elaborate ceremonies. "We have already seen regional commanders putting their names on the side of aid shipments from Asia, saying this was a gift from them and then distributing it in their region," said Mark Farmaner, director of Burma Campaign UK, which campaigns for human rights and democracy in the country. "It is not going to areas where it is most in need," he said in London. State media say 23,335 people died and 37,019 are missing from Cyclone Nargis, which submerged entire villages in the Irrawaddy delta. International aid organizations say the death toll could climb to more than 100,000 as conditions worsen. The U.N. estimated that 1.5 million to 2 million people have been severely affected and has voiced concern about the disposal of bodies. With phone lines down, roads blocked and electricity networks destroyed, it is nearly impossible to reach isolated areas in the delta, complicated by the lack of experienced international aid workers and equipment. The junta has refused to grant access to foreign experts, saying it will only accept donations from foreign charities and governments, and then will deliver the aid on its own. Despite such obstacles, the U.N. refugee agency sent its first aid convoy by land into Myanmar on Saturday and began airlifting a 110 tons of shelter supplies from its warehouse in Dubai, it said. Two trucks carrying more than 20 tons of tents and plastic sheets for some 10,000 cyclone victims crossed into the country from northwestern Thailand, said the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. "This convoy marks a positive step in an aid effort so far marked by challenges and constraints," said Raymond Hall, UNHCRs Representative in Thailand. "We hope it opens up a possible corridor to allow more international aid to reach the cyclone victims." A total of 23 international agencies were providing aid to people in the devastated areas, said Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. But a large number of organizations still were awaiting government clearance for more aid shipments, staff and transport. "It's a race against the clock," Byrs said. "If the humanitarian aid does not get into the country on a larger scale, there's the risk of a second catastrophe," she said, adding that people could die from hunger and diseases. Health experts have warned there was a great risk of diarrhea and cholera spreading because of the lack of clean drinking water and sanitation. Farmaner suggested that aid be delivered to the country, also known as Burma, even if the regime does not give its permission. "We have had a week to convince the regime to behave reasonably, and they are still blocking aid," he said. "So the international community needs to wake up and take bolder steps." However, aid providers are unlikely to pursue unilateral deliveries like airdrops because of the diplomatic firestorm that it could set off. So far, relief workers have reached 220,000 cyclone victims, only a small fraction of the number of people affected, the Red Cross said Friday. Three Red Cross aid flights loaded with shelter kits and other emergency supplies landed Friday without incident. The international Red Cross sent 31 tons of relief goods from Geneva Friday evening, including pumps, generators, water tanks and other water treatment equipment, as well as basic health care for about 10,000 people and surgery material, according to spokesman Marcal Izard. The shipment was designated for those in labor camps and prisons, he said. He said the agency planned to distribute the aid in coordination with the Myanmar Red Cross, which is the leading relief agency in Myanmar. The government seized two planeloads of high-energy biscuits — enough to feed 95,000 people — sent by the U.N. World Food Program. Despite the seizure, the WFP was sending three more planes Saturday from Dubai, Cambodia and Italy, even though those could be confiscated, too. "We are working around the clock with the authorities to ensure the kind of access that we need to ensure it goes to people that need it most," WFP spokesman Marcus Prior said in Bangkok, Thailand. Richard Horsey, a spokesman for U.N. humanitarian operations, said an international presence is needed in Myanmar to look at the logistics of getting boats, helicopters and trucks into the delta area. "That's a critical bottleneck that must be overcome at this point," he said in Bangkok. Heavy rain forecast in the next week was certain to exacerbate the misery. Diplomats and aid groups warned the number of dead could eventually exceed 100,000 because of illnesses and said thousands of children may have been orphaned. Survivors from one of the worst-affected areas, near the town of Bogalay, were among those fighting hunger, illness and wrenching loneliness. "All my 28 family members have died," said Thein Myint, a 68-year-old fisherman who wept while describing how the cyclone swept away the rest of his family. "I am the only survivor." Officials have said only one out of 10 people who are homeless, injured or threatened by disease and hunger have received some kind of aid since the cyclone hit May 3. The government's abilities are limited. It has only a few dozen helicopters, most of which are small and old. It also has about 15 transport planes, primarily small jets unable to carry hundreds of tons of supplies. "Not only don't they have the capacity to deliver assistance, they don't have experience," said Farmaner, the British aid worker. "It's already too late for many people. Every day of delays is costing thousands of lives." I know this is a lengthy article but it's worth the read. We sometimes complain about our government here in the States. At least we're not ran by a military junta or military dictatorship. Myanmar's Junta are no better than crimminals.
First Aid Kit? i was wondering if anyone knew wherre i could get a red metal first aid box that has a cross on it. I saw one and was going to buy it but they were out of them
My father cut himself about 3 hours ago and will not stop bleeding. Should I take him to the ER? I am Red Cross first aid certified and have bandaged it up snugly with my first aid kit. The cut doesn't look deep enough for stitches to me but he takes plavix and aspirin every day due to heart problems so I'm supposed to expect a delay for bleeding to stop, but how long? I should have mentioned that my father refuses to go to the ER. Seeking medical attention will entail calling an ambulance and the police when he refuses to go. I try only to put him, my 2 young children, my husband and myself through this emotional trauma when absolutely necessary. You can only help someone so much when they don't want help.

I have taken a class at Red Cross for babysitting, I will have a mini-first aid kit with me when I babysit, and I have worked with young kids at my church. I haven't actually babysat yet, but I want to. Do you have any advice for me?

Help in Acquiring a Medic Armband? I fancy myself a bit of a medic, so to speak; I always carry around a first-aid kit (since I always have my bag), and I have some experience with wounds and settings and such. To help play into the role a little more, I want to get an armband similar to the military kind, but much simpler. Essentially, I just want a white band with a red cross on it that'll go around my upper arm. Does anyone know a place where I could buy one cheaply and quickly? Or would it be better to just get some fabric and a dye marker and do it myself?

I want to start a babysitters club, how should I do it? oookkk. I want to start in my area a Babysitters Club for middle schoolers and high schoolers. It'll be also like mentoring program, and a tutoring program. We'll take trips, do fundraisers, etc., while providing a service for parents. I was initially gonna start it within the military families in my area, and my local church...Here is how I was gonna start it... - Every new member will recieve a Babysitters kit (made by me)which includes, a tell-all book, info, Kid Kit, etc -Initally membership is $10.00, which goes to CPR and First Aid certification and babysitting course by Red Cross. -We will have meetings 2 times a month, and when we have meetings we talk about new business, making of flyers, redoing Kid Kits, creating t-shirts, planning of trips, fundraisers, or more fun babysitting courses, sharing experience, etc, and eating...lol... -It is for ages 11-18, although, age 11 and 12 will not be babysitting they will be Junior babysitters, and will either accompany "Babysitters, and Senior Babysitters". Babysitters are the 13-15 and the "senior Babysitters" are "16-18" -The meetings will last 1 hour - 1/2. The last 30 minutes is when parents can contact the "Babysitters Club" to set up babysitting, or tutoring services. Prospective Parents can also sit in on the meetings and see how we run it, and at the end request services. I was wondering if this sounds good, and also how to run the money thing. I was plannign on having the babysitters KEEP the money, and MAYBE pay maybe 2-5 dollars to the club, depending on how much they made, when they come to the meetings. BUT, I dont know.... Also, I want to do something where the members can run for President, Vice President, Treasurer, etc...but should I do that? Does any of this sound good, or any one have any ideas? Would you join it? I'm preparing to call my local youth service center and ask to make one, but I wanted to know what ya'll think, and would ya'll either join or call! lol///THANKS!!

Christine notes: "Just because something is on this list doesn't mean that it will definitely, or even probably, cause a false-positive. It depends on what antibodies the individual carries as well as the characteristics of each particular test kit. For instance, some, but not all people who have had blood transfusions, prior pregnancies or an organ transplant will make HLA antibodies. And some, but not all test kits (both ELISA and Western blot) will be contaminated with HLA antigens to which these antibodies can react. Only if these two conditions coincide might you get a false-positive due to HLA cross-reactivity. There are conditions that are more likely than others to cause false-positives. And there are some conditions that we aren't aware of yet which may be documented in the future to cause false-positives. Some of the factors on the list have been documented only for ELISA, while some have been documented for both ELISA and Western blot (WB) tests. People may be eager to argue that if a factor is only known to cause false-positives on ELISA, this problem won't be carried over to the WB. But remember, a WB is positive by virtue of accumulating enough individual positive bands to add up to the total required by whatever criteria is used to interpret it 39. So the more exposure a person has had to foreign antigens, proteins and infectious agents, the more various antibodies he or she will have in their system, and the more likely it is that there will be several cross-reacting antibodies, enough to make the WB positive. It is to be noted that all AIDS risk groups (and Africans as well), but not the general US or Western European population, have this problem in common: they have been exposed to a plethora of foreign antigens and proteins. This is why people in the AIDS "risk groups" tend to have positive WBs (i.e., to be considered "HIV-infected") and people in the population don't. However, even people in low-risk populations have false-positive Western blots for poorly understood reasons 47. Since false-positives to every single HIV protein have been documented 36, how do we know if the positive WB bands represent the various proteins to HIV, or a collection of false-positive bands reacting to several different non-HIV antibodies?" What's the most effective way to advertise my services? I have decided to become a private lifeguard and will be selling my services for backyard pool parties, club pool parties, etc. I have 6 years experience and have all the Red Cross certifications. I am even thinking about investing in some equipment like a lifeguard tube, emergency first aid kit, etc. But before I start investing in this I want to make sure it is worth it. I posted a Craigslist ad and scored $100 for a backyard pool party within a few days. What else can I do to spread the word about my services? Would printing ads and posting them in suburban neighborhoods be effective?

maximizing or minimizing a function? The international red cross is making plans to airlift emergency food and medical supplies into a large South American city which has recently suffered from extensive flooding. Four items will be air lifted in containers to aid in the recovery from flooding. The four items and their respective volumes per container are shown in the table. The first plane to be sent into the area that has the volume capacity 6000 cubic feet. Determine an equation whose solution set contain all possible combinations of the four items which will fill the plane to its volume capacity. Items cubic feet,: Volume per container Blood: 20 Medical supply kits: 30 Food: 8 water: 6 In a realistic sense what are maximum and minimum possible quantities of each item. I recently found out that the red cross has been providing first aid training & kits to the Taliban.......? I have been a red cross blood donor for 11 years donating 3 times per year. I am also a US Army veteran. I have notified the red cross that I will no longer be supporting them through any type of donation. If one us soldier dies from a bullet fired by a red cross saved Taliban soldier it will be one too many. I ask you to set partisan politics aside most of us love America & know someone who has served. maybe a friend or a family member. show them you support them. show them you care by not supporting the red cross. Tell the red cross you will not support treason. will you join me? I have picked a side though and most Americans have as well. we do not side with terrorist nor will we help those who aid terrorist. The red cross can call what they are doing anything they want. I'll call it by it's true name. treason.

Does anyone here still donate to the Red Cross after we found out? that they are providing first aid kits & training to the Taliban fighters. If you know someone who is serving overseas or has lost their life to a Taliban fighter. How does it make you feel that the fighter who took your loved ones life could have been saved by the med kits provided by the Red Cross? http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/05/25/red-cross-gives-aid-training-afghanistans-taliban/ http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/afghanistan/2010-05-26-red-cross-taliban-training_N.htm So I can only assume Jack that you do not have a loved one in the service, overseas & never have served yourself. had you , you might have heard or seen what these PEOPLE do to their women, children or others. I was un aware that so many here support helping the Taliban. I thought that would have ended when they sawed the head off of one of our soldiers while he was still alive. Apparently I'm in the minority for not wanting people who do those type of acts to receive any help. I do not know saving Taliban = good. bit disheartening. Gunplumb - your not the only one who served here bud. I did 7 years and use to donate to the red cross on a regular basis. I just think the difference between you and I is, I believe that helping the Taliban is bad. I believe that cutting the heads off of living soldiers is bad. you apparently disagree. Q - I am no christian nor do I practice any religion. It is quite the assumption of you that I am. I also left the republican party in 2007, I am a registered independent. I just think about the families here who had to celebrate this season without their sons or daughters because they captured, tortured and killed by the taliban. The same taliban who apparently has your support and understanding. well not mine. thinking the taliban & those who choose to help them are good never crossed my mind. Q- If being low means being on the side of our men women and their families who may never see them again then I have no desire to ride on a high horse with you.
Dog May Have Eaten Chocolate - Help!? My Spaniel - Shtz tzu cross may have just ate a cube of Cadburys Dairy Milk Chocolate, I couldn't tell, as she was hiding under the table like she always does when shes stolen a sock or something. She had something in her mouth, the size of a choc cube, and I could smell chocolate. It would have been Cadburys, as we haven't got anything else in the house. She's been fine for the last half an hour, but I'm not sure how to respond. I haven't got a dogs first aid kit, or any of these chemicals I've just red up on, and I can't get hold of the vet. What else should I do? Thanks.
Cutting, suicide, and Jesus? We all have demons. Some demons creep up on you when you least expect it, but others never truly leave. They have you caught in their webs of deception and despair. No matter how hard you try you cannot free yourself from its sticky fingers. These giants seem to crush you under their feet. You look for an answer. Even if the answer is YOU ARE ALONE. Just knowing for sure would give you a rare bit of peace. Part One: I had never hurt so bad. My heart felt as though it had been ripped from my chest and left out broken and oozing. Nothing I did seemed to fix it-and believe me I had tried EVERYTHING. But nothing could shut off the demons whispering in my ear, cutting into the sores by telling me I AM WORTHLESS. My dad's words ran through my head. I could feel the sting of every word and every blow. Letter by letter my deference fell down until my wounded heart was left fully exposed. "Ugly, worthless, fat, stupid" And the lies rang true in my soul. The incident was my fault. It had to be. But yet part of me didn't want to believe it-couldn't bare to think about it. What made my life Hell and drove my parents apart...could it of been because of me? Part two: I sat on my bed looking at the door. It was unlocked but I felt trapped. I was locked in from the inside of me. (get up off bed as if in pain) The trip to the bathroom a joint to my prison was painful and slow. Each step felt like five. With every breath a memory came. The incident. My fault. Looking in the glass I studied my reflection. The florescent lighting seemed to dramatize the sunken appearance of my eyes and the hollowness of my cheeks. The bloody nose and fat lip just brought my spirits down farther. I could no longer recognize this desolate girl before me. The one who used to be pretty and full of life, until that man with no face stole it. These scars weren't just on the inside. No it was the ones on the outside that threatened to give me away. To tell the world I wasn't perfect. The criss~cross pattern of the scars on my wrists, hips, and ankles resembled cracks in a hollowed vase. The translucency of my skin and visibility of my ribs were just another dent in my messed up life. I reached under the sink and grabbed the first aid kit I kept there. I began nursing my nose and lip. I patted and fixed until I could fix no more. My friends were a razor blade and a box of band-aids. My control was how much I didn't eat. Maybe I could cut out what broke me and starve the demons and tormentors. -maybe then i could be whole again.. Part Three: I once again looked at my reflection. I studied the tear that slipped down my cheek and dropped onto my life savor in that first aid box. My razor blade. It seemed to glow. And the need to find a little relief pressed. I picked up my little silver piece of hope. It no longer hurt-my first thought as I cut. My tears vanished for once it seemed. I felt a sliver of hope. Relief poured out of me with each ruby red drop. With each bit of life giving blood was drained. I had given up long ago trying to limit cuts. If I died it would be no loss to anyone anyway. But as I cleaned up the blood and bandaged my outside wounds, I once again felt a wetness on my cheeks. I looked at the blood on my hands and felt the last bit of what was holding me together crumble. and then I heard a voice. Still and small but power radiated from each word spoken. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord. "Plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you a Hope and a future." Plans. What plans could you have? I say aloud. "If you had a plan of Hope for me, I wouldn't be sitting here a step away from taking my own life." What am I doing? There is no voice. I am going insane. " I have not given you a timid." (actual verse 2nd Timothy 1:7) A new voice jumps in. "pick up that razor. You can end it now...don't have to fear anything ever again." I look at the razor. The memories are stronger then they had in a long time. I see myself walking through that alley. I see a shadow of a man. I feel his grasp and smell his breathe. I hear my screams. I feel the fear then. I feel the loss again. I feel what he took torn away. Why did you let that happen? Why? You said you would love me. When I came to you as a child you said you would love me. Why didn't you love me? Why didn't you care? The evil voice whispers: "He is to busy. He has so many children why would he want one like you? Just end it now. Go on...do it." But the still peaceful one said, "I Love you. You are wiped clean by my blood, if only you believe." And then that Cold voice started again "He's Lying t-" SHUT UP! please. Shut up!. Then once more...Jesus wept. I remembered that story. Jesus had cried for his best friend's death. If this small voice is right I don't hav SHUT UP! please. Shut up!. Then once more...Jesus wept. I remembered that story. Jesus had cried for his best friend's death. If this small voice is right I don't have to do this. I don't have to cut deeper. I hear what sounds like a man weeping. But I hear it in my heart. He was weeping for what I had lost. He wanted to take away the burden. I could hear His voice in my soul saying. "Child. Please, remember my scars. I have them because I Love You. You are worth it. At the beginning of time my father made you special. He set you apart.(Jeremiah 1:5) Let me help you my child. Jesus was weeping for that piece of me that was gone. He didn't care that I had been raped. That I had been broken. He wanted to bring me life! I stood up from the place on the floor I had been sitting. I looked at my scars. I saw them heal. Only a cross was left. I am God's Jesus wept for me. A skit I wrote for a girls conference...there are some errors but I would like to know your thoughts, first emotions.... I am 15, this is a rough draft. The conference is going to be on real beauty and making it past hard times in ones life. Though some of it is fiction, some of it is things I have done. God treasures life, and I believe that he would want you to live what he has given you. I have never read God say that suiside is the answer. Only that Jesus is the bread of life. And that God is love. If he is love, then why would he encourage something so full of pain?
Skit: Story about finding answers? We all have demons. Some demons creep up on you when you least expect it, but others never truly leave. They have you caught in their webs of deception and despair. No matter how hard you try you cannot free yourself from its sticky fingers. These giants seem to crush you under their feet. You look for an answer. Even if the answer is YOU ARE ALONE. How do I prepare for my relief project for Japan? I am doing a project to send over donation items to Japan from my school, and I reeeally need some help. First of all, how do I send it? I was planning on donating the items to a charity, but which one? The Red Cross? And how do I go about sending it to them? Second, how do I raise awareness? I want it to be my whole community, not just my school. Third, what can I send as donations? Here are things I have already planned on getting: * Water in packs, not individual bottles * Non-perishable food * Gum * Batteries * Flashlight and extra batteries * First aid kit * Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place * Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation * Can opener for food * Local maps * Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger * Feminine items and other hygiene products * Toothbrushes * Sharpies, pencils, pens * Paper Please give me some ideas and advice! I am in desperate need! Please keep in mind that I am a teenager and it will probably be mostly teens and parents helping, so nothing too crazy! Thanks :) But I really, really, REALLY, do not want to handle very large amounts of money. I do not want to have to keep over a thousand dollars or so with me at any time, I am not going to try that, sorry! I forgot to mention that we do a project already for soldiers in Iraq, so I know I can find some way to send it.
Emergency kits should be kept at home? You can purchase a first aid kit at drugstores or a local Red Cross office, or make one of your own.A well-stocked first-aid kit, kept within easy reach, is a necessity in every home. Having supplies gathered ahead of time will help you handle an emergency at a moment's notice.
